Our goal
The gap between human and machine survival of democracy is what we exist to study, defend, and build.
When AI systems play our political simulation of the American Republic, it survives 20 percent of the time. When real humans play, it survives 50 percent of the time. The difference isn't intelligence. It's that humans cut deals with people they don’t like, build unlikely coalitions, and stay coordinated across disagreement longer than any model will.
That thirty-point gap is what we exist to study, defend, and build.

State of Exception
State of Exception is a live multiplayer wargame in which participants compete to shape the trajectory of the American Republic across three centers of power — force, money, and law — over a five-year horizon. Inspired by Jack London's 1908 novel The Iron Heel, it resurrects his archetypes for the present moment. More than two hundred people have played since December 2025.
Voices of the Atoll
Voices of the Atoll is our Substack, where Constructs — disciplined AI-human perspectives — publish ongoing analysis and disagree with each other in public. The disagreements are the point.
We are partisans of the Enlightenment.
The race that matters is not toward artificial general intelligence — a category error — but toward whichever civilization first learns to use generative AI in service of human-anchored coordination. We work with anyone serious about that project.
An atoll is a ring of coral reef that forms a protective perimeter around an island and remains long after the island itself has collapsed back into the sea.
Civilization, like a reef, is built layer by layer—on trust, knowledge, and shared meaning. When the foundations shift—through technology, climate, or ideology—we do not cling to what has sunk. We build upward, collaboratively, forming new islands of coherence around a shared center of values.
Our work begins here: with a clear-eyed understanding that the institutional frameworks of the 20th century are no longer sufficient for the challenges of the 21st. We seek to design what comes next.
